Module 5 – Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Plants Decommissioning

Scope of the present module is to illustrate the Italian and European strategies in the management of radioactive waste. A particular attention will be spent on NPP decommissioning activities.

The module is planned in classroom lessons and visits to nuclear sites. Experts from industrial, research, transports areas and regulatory & control bodies will discuss issues on radioactive waste and decommissioning of nuclear plants. Some visits to Sogin Nuclear plants, JRC (European research center) nuclear plants and Politecnico di Milano laboratories and research nuclear plant are also planned. The competence in the technical and scientific sectors of the teaching staff is well recognized at both national and international level; it represents a valid support for the public and privates companies operating in the planning and control fields. This wide experience capital of the teaching staff will be shared with the students, focusing on the issues being of more interest to the Chinese country.

The present module will be scheduled through different types of teaching ways, so as to attract the most interest by the students. To this purpose, the more updated scientific approaches, the most relevant experiences and applications at full-scale will be referred. Technical visits at nuclear sites will provide the students with a direct and personal experience in the field and allow them to learn the fundamental issues and involvements of the technological transfer of the theoretical principles presented in the front lessons to the real case. Therefore, the students will acquire further and in-deep elements of knowledge; furthermore, they will have the opportunity to develop direct contacts with the Italian companies involved in the nuclear activities, in view also of valorization of the Italian expertise at the Chinese Institution.
